Name of Mission Archaeological ethnographic survey and excavation between Matamma and Quoz Burra
Mission No. QSAP 39
Institution Shendi University
Location Shendi, River Nile State
The archaeological, ethnographic survey and excavation programmes that is being undertaken along the western bank of the Nile in the Shendi region seeks to shed light on that district’s past during two formative periods in Sudan’s history. The first quest is to find evidence of prehistoric settlements that would reveal the nature and economical bases of these early communities in central Sudan. The second aim of this mission is to survey and excavate sites related to the Meroitic Period, thereby providing evidence of the important role played by the Shendi region in terms of the development of the Meroitic economy and the agricultural sector.
