Name of Mission Sai Island
Mission No. QSAP 2
Institution Charles-de-Gaulle University, Lille, France
Location Sai Island, Northern State
The archaeological mission at Sai Island seeks to shed light on the domestic Pharaonic settlement by emphasizing the planning of this unique fortified town that dates back to the very beginning of the18th Dynasty. By clearing urban structures, the successive phases of occupation of the fortified town are revealed, from the New Kingdom necropolis, south of the town, to the elite Meroitic cemeteries. Additionally, the project has excavated and classified ceramic assemblages and lithic artefacts from various sites of Neolithic and Pre-Kerma times, as well as from Christian sites from the Medieval Period.
