Mission Name Bioarchaeology of Nubia
Mission No. QSAP 17
Institution Arizona State University, United States of America
Location El-Ginefab Region, River Nile State
The Bioarchaeology of Nubia Expedition (BONE) aims to document known and previously unknown sites to understand the density of settlement in this region, the placement of settlements, cemeteries and rock art within the changing landscape over time and as subsistence practices changed, and the impact on health and well-being of the inhabitants. This goal will be met through excavation of both settlement and cemetery sites. Analyses of changing mortuary practices and the health and behaviour discerned from the skeletal remains of those interred are a major emphasis. This work will promote understanding of the region’s inhabitants through time in an area where sites are disappearing or disturbed as development increases.
